Texas became a state in 1845 but not until 1854 did the Legislature appropiate $14,500 for construction of a "suitable residence" for the Governor or Texas.

Built in 1854 and has been the home of every governor since 1856. Along with being the oldest governors mansion this side of the mississippi river, the other three are on the east side of the river. In 1974 it was declared a U.S National Historic Landmark.
